Maybe Mom really did like Sis better, but is sure was funny that Sis got the house in the Will, and Jimmy got nothing. And this was in the Will that was changed 6 months before Mom died; during the time Sis was taking care of Mom – by a lawyer Sis recommended. (Jimmy lived 3,000 miles away.) Sound familiar? Unfortunately, it happens … a lot. And if it isn’t Sis, it’s the caretaker. Or the long-time neighbor. Or even, damnit, the lawyer that drafted Mom’s will. (I can tell you stories of one lawyer in particular that a judge said looked at elderly, lonely clients as “targets of opportunity.” And, more’s the pity, he’s still in practice.) Probate and Estate litigation is always ugly. It’s fighting about money, and about hurt feelings from when you were 6. It’s not easy. But we’ve been there, and done that. If you’re confronted with this kind of situation, you can rest assured that the attorneys at Hanson Law Firm can look at the whole thing – objectively – and help create a path out of a bad situation.
